At the opening of the autumn session of the European Parliament it was announced that a majority of the 785 MEPs had signed a Written Declaration calling for a US-style Europe-wide Missing Child Alert, promoted by the McCanns and Edward McMillan-Scott. This is a majority of the 785 MEPs and so becomes a formal Resolution of the European Parliament. A pilgrimage of parents whose children have been taken by their partners arrived at the European Parliament in Strasbourg to present a petition to Vice-President Edward McMillan-Scott MEP (centre) - a leading campaigner for children's rights across Europe. The four-week walk covering nearly 290 miles (462 km) from the European Parliament in Brussels to its offshoot in Strasbourg was led by Sabine van der Elst (right). Ms van der Elst has had no personal contact with her daughter Maeliss, now 13, since the child was taken from Belgium to his German homeland by the father five years ago. The petition, supported by more than 12,000 people, was described by the campaigners as a 'last chance' to get the authorities to respect their children's right to contact with both parents. More.... Since 2003, 400 American children have been found - 80 % within the crucial first 72 hours - through the Justice Department's Amber Alert. Only France has a similar state-funded 'severe weather warning'-style missing child alert, which uses TV and radio flashes, messages on motorway gantries and town centre information boards.
Edward slams Russian invasion of Georgia
Edward McMillan-Scott MEP - pictured here with Russian opposition leader Gary Kasparov at a Moscow conference - says the EU should stand firm against Russian aggression. "The EU is supposed to stand up for human rights and democracy – it's been giving up on that," he said. He told a news agency the outer core of the EU – "tough-minded and experienced in living under communism" - back up his pro-Georgian stance.
